Portland Preschool strives to provide a dynamic and inspired indoor and outdoor learning environment in which children thrive.

[Our daughter] loves coming to school; and she feels very bonded to you, your home, and her new friends. We feel so incredibly lucky to have landed on your doorstep.
— A SE Portland Mom

Rooted in both the Reggio Emilia Approach and Experiential Learning philosophy, a Portland Preschool (PdxP) education strives to honor a child’s role as director of his or her education while providing an environment rich in opportunity for hands-on experiences.

Our light-filled school and organic learning gardens on the edge of Mt. Tabor Park act as a “third teacher,” our place for laughter-filled magical play, exploration and discovery. Within this protective environment, we infuse the children’s days with respect, friendship, compassion, generosity and courage.

About

Portland Preschool, founded in 2007, is a home-based state-certified school in the SE neighborhood of Mt.Tabor which promotes an arts-based inclusive classroom rooted in the Reggio Emilia Approach.

I feel that where my kids need the most help... they are getting exactly what they need. Your grounded approach in all aspects is just what my children need to continue their growth and progress.

Here we explore and celebrate the world around us, our natural environment and local culture, our home in Portland. Throughout the development of this program, I continue to connect with artists, musicians, therapists, teachers and community organizations to encourage them to share their knowledge with us. This connection greatly enhances our sense of community and reminds us of the quality resources available in the Portland Metro area. In turn, we can hope to empower those people by appreciating their talents, regarding them as teachers and inviting them to learn with us.

Parents should know that I consider it vital that they are honored as productive members of this cooperative educational team. Together, we trust children to be interested in subjects worth knowing, and we trust ourselves to respond effectively as facilitators of their education. In this way, we create a collaborative community inspiring for adults and children alike.

Please do contact me with your ideas, comments and dreams for this program. We have a terrific opportunity on our hands to support our children and incite a lifelong love of learning.

Philosophy

We LOVE that you are the boys’ teacher. You remind me of one of my favorite teachers when I was a little runt. Makes me feel pretty lucky to have you in our lives.

Our exceptionally low student:teacher ratio (5:1) allows for a calmer environment. Teachers have more time and space to meet the individual needs of the students. This low ratio also allows the opportunity for greater depth of exploration and study for both students and teachers alike.
